So let's say I wanted to gift an friend some YC on a birthday or whatever.

Could I enter another player's ID number and buy them YC with the new system...or would that set off all kinds of bells and whistles that could potentially lead to problems???

Any Viking here to answer that.

They said in the sticky above that people would be able to buy Yocash for another player by simply entering their player id.

Yes you could use it for that functionality.

Currently we do not have the ability to send a note along with the gift, but we are looking at adding that.
