The substitution effect is in play only if you own neither item and are buying one of them for fun. If I own the old hat as a 'rare' item, it still retains more value as a rare item versus the new one. It is 'worth' more to collectors than the new one. The new hat's value is that it satisfied some players' 'want' for a silly shark hat, not a collectible item.
And I absolutely that it is a great thing that BVG is luring older players back into buying stuff. I blew through 100 yo cash this weekend like it was nothing. At this rate I might actually need to buy some for Halloween.

I am so tired of those who want everything re-released or given to them, I could and have spit, many times. I actually read someplace that those who quit the game in 2012 and came back recently want everything that was put in game while they were gone added back in! Those of us who bought vip and continued in game despite freezing, hacking etc. just need to suck it up and not make a fuss. Let me tell you I will make a fuss until I quit this game. And enough with the constant BigV please release or re-release this!

The more you played and the more you spent, the more items and coins you accumulated. At some point either time, poor game control, or boredom caused some of these players to stop spending or stop playing. A few of them are now back along with many who stayed just to watch Rome burn. But what remains is that the sum of these players' efforts in playing and spending on Yo have value. Even as the unreleased items are hitting the stores and the buying and selling occurs, the 'wealth' created from the history of playing remains. Prices have not slid as deep or as fast as I thought they would, even as coins are sucked from Yo.
My guess now is that it will be a slow grind to draw 'rare' item pricing down to levels that seem reasonable. But the reverse inflation is really a lie as the buying power of an old item will remain constant. For example, if there are 100 coins in all of yo and sell my rare at 10, I effectively traded 10% of the market. If there are only 10 coins in all of Yo and I trade my item at 1, I have still effectively traded 10% of the market.
I guess my point is that there will never be a redistribution of the value of the old items. Their value remains constant in relation to the overall value within Yo. Players who want them, will always have to buy yo cash and deal or trade efficiently enough to obtain them. They will never fall to a level that will be low enough that a factory runner will ever own one.

Huh? Say that again?
I know that a few are yelling for re-releases, but it's falling on deaf ears. Let them yell and beg and plead. I just ignore them. It's much easier than trying to reason with them.
