When you look at an empty room do you picture it your head what you want it to look like ?
Do you sketch it out on paper?
Or do you just throw stuff in and wiggle it around till it looks good?
How long can it take to design a great looking room ?
Do you like to go with a theme or just design around one colour or item? eg fish tanks or dragons

I'm not that good at room design still learning yeah I know this long and still learning what can I say bit slow me ..
so any help tips on planning are appreciated
I love using the older themes and would love to do a Trailer room using items just from yodepot and the Trailer theme , well ok maybe use a TV ariel or two from Sin City but mainly Trailer . Can it be done ?

I just put items out one by one and the. Try to focus on making the room seem as big and uncluttered as possible.

Missy when I decorate a room I have a general idea of how I want it to look when I start.I get my main furniture pieces in the room. Then finish it off with the small touches like items sitting on tables, pictures on the walls, and rugs. I don't think I ever stay within themes when doing a room because I always find stuff in other themes that look good and use them too. It can take months for me to finish a house or a room. Right now I have several houses designated for seasonal decorations I am waiting for, I just don't get in a rush with a room and eventually I will finish it to my liking. Just don't be afraid to keep tweaking it until it looks the way you want it. Good luck in your decorating!

i like to shop in edit mode and decorate my rooms as i go. depot is very limited to shop in edit mode not all the walls and floors show up. kinda annoying you have to stop what you are doing and go to the depot store. i was a fan of community site, i would shop there easier to find everything. i miss that site :(

Tink I agree. I can't count the times in the past and since I have started back playing, that I bought a floor or wallpaper and then didn't like it with the room design. I do wish we could try on wallpaper and flooring too! It's just like buying them in RL, sometimes a swatch looks better than a whole room done in it.

I look at what I have in my inventory... see what fits and hope for inspiration..
sometimes I get a result I'm really pleased with. ;)

That depends.

Sometimes I have a specific theme in mind.
Yesterday for instance I wanted to decorate a traditional German beer garden.
I knew a few items that would be useful, but it was still a lot of trying out.
Mixed plenty of different themes for it.

Other times I may go with a specific color combination .
Earlier this week I made a garden in purple, blue, white and brown mostly.

And sometimes I have absolutely no clue at all,and just randomly pull out items of my inventory to see different combinations and hoping for an idea to come.

Good questions

I try to have a general idea what I wish to use and how I want it to look

it depends on if you want to mix themes ... right now back at work on my only trailer, sin city themed.

I have found if you mix themes and have more items to work with I end up with often something that has more depth to it.

I see an empty room, look at it to see the environment, what I have, and ask myself " Will a pool look good here with the surroundings, or maybe a nice home would be cozy over here", those kinds of questions. Then I just work. LOL!

I think I first get a fanciful feel for what I want the room to look like, then look for things in the store and my inventory to make that happen.

It depends on where I'm decorating. If there's a house that I like the layout I may go with that and use parts of it (such as Halloween or the Deserted Island) and sometimes I have something in mind so I look around for an empty spot and I go at it.

I have never used only one theme, ever. I also like to put one focus in the room that I find would be interesting in the scenario I create. For example a Hot Air Balloon in the park.

I don't think I ever decorated a "normal" looking house but that's my kind of fun in Yo.

You will find your niche if you keep pushing items around and do be afraid to go back and rearrange everything.

Have Fun!

Having an eidetic memory helps.
If it's just a room i'm working on.. I place a few key items in the middle and build the room around them, trying to create a theme using random.

If it's trying to recreate something I like to be as accurate as possible.

I sometimes have an idea of how I want it to look, and sometimes just put something together. I definitely don't stick to any themes because half the fun for me is finding items that look nice together but are from all different themes. Some rooms I get done in a few hours, some over a few days, and some gradually over time. I also find myself often adding to or slightly modifying already complete rooms.

I personally never sketch a yo room before doing it. And I never sit and "decide" to create a room out of the blue. Something must trigger an idea in my mind. The best ideas usually come randomly, even from a single item.

Like, for example, last week, I saw that emerald witch with animated rain clouds. I love halloween and witchy stuff since forever and always. With the new heaven avenue, I immediately imagined a "witch heaven" It's creepy but still a "heaven" so now, I am slowly working on that room.

Other than that, for classic themes like christmas, halloween, mafia, etc everyone's rooms more or less look similar in the end. Trying to create a small story in your mind for each room can lead to many different ideas.

Also creating awesome rooms is a bit up to the person's talent and imagination i guess.

Precisely! There's no right or wrong way to decorate. Just decorate the way you like. Let your creativity flow and just have fun with it :)

I don't just do a room, but a whole house with a particular theme or idea in mind. Usually the house or a specific room in the house will give me an idea and then I decorate accordingly. Sometimes I really like a particular theme and will look for a house to bring that theme to life. Sometimes it's a character that I'll design for. For example, I have a snowman's house, Cupid's house and a leprechaun's house. I just try to imagine what their homes would look like and then decorate. I choose items from any theme, but sometimes a particular theme will be used as the main decor. As for how long it takes? That depends on what's available at the time. I've got some houses/rooms that are still waiting for just the right items to come out. I like my houses to kind of tell a story, or at least tell visitors what type of people would live there.

Trailor is great place to start learning to decorate, go to yodepot and place some swimming pool tiles in a line add some plants or yodepot rocks along the rivers edge and u made your first stream. Then just add table n chair or picnic blanket and a tree, add a few plants for a garden and you did your first garden. I start with water first and decorate around it. Go to the FB decorating pages and look thru photos. Theres 1 page that has trailor tranformations. Check those out you will get ideas and then start creating your own design. It's fun plus the bathroom you can make it into a huge room by laying rugs across the whole screen then place a room on top of it.
