I sell a lot of things and recently bought an old timey phone. A lot of times while I'm having an event there's another one going on that I'd like to go to. If I put the phone out and someone rings it while I'm at another event, am I suppose to hear it? Is that the way it works?

I don't think so. You would only hear yours if you are in that room.

But how come when I go to sales they have a phone with message saying ring for service and they aren't there?

If you ring those phones and they aren't there they won't hear it . Phones are used like this , you are in room with phone and you have another tab opened.
Like if you were on yoworld and also on the Yoworld forums . You can't see yoworld but you can hear the phone . So then you go to the yoworld tab when you hear it . If the owner isn't there, they might be in another room selling an item . Sometimes there are signs that say , If I am not here I will be right back .
