My inventory shows that I have lots of Red/Blue/Green chests.
But, when I use the 'Gift' tab for friends sometimes there are a few chests available to gift but I have noticed that I have many more in my inventory than show up as being available for gifting.
Have others noticed this?
Is there a reason for this or can anybody explain why this is so?

I've never heard of this, or I'm not understanding what you are saying. Do you mean that there is, say 10 blue ones in your inventory but only 5 show up to gift?
Which inventory tab are you looking at?

Yes, seeing e.g. 10 blue chests in inventory
But
Maybe only 5 when I open a buddy to 'gift'
There are seemingly several missing on all chests.

Maybe some of them are in your room, so you can't gift untill put them back in to inventory
