It depends on what you mean because there are many ways to do this.
1. sending the chest is on top of game - free gifts - send to all - and open gifts is next to it. the max amount is 250 open or you only get a few coins after the 250. So I only open 250..
2. through the buddy list. -click gift.
3. on a visit run send gift through their white envelope message box or through the app with the old lame gifts. the only thing that is useful to me in that is the gold fish.
4. click on a live person and send a gift by clicking on gift. This gift will come from your inventory.

i am not sure if I covered it all but here is how I remember.
there is not a way to gift from the store directly so you have to buy it first then gift it.
