So if I bid on something and don't win they take the money anyway?

The coins are removed while your bid is being held so you don't have insufficient funds if you do win. Once you are outbid, the money is put back into your account like normal. I like this feature because I can see if I lost on a bid without opening AH my money has returned. Hope this helps.
