How do you choose a kingdom ? Do you have to buy a castle to get one? I don't understand the whole kingdom thing.

It's just a game. You don't need to buy anything to be in, just...pick one, and join in ;D
Might I suggest Teuthidas, as it is by far the best house. Squidies rule!

You may want to wear the colors of that kingdom though.
