There are a few threads on this. Here's one of them. I'll see if I can find more :)

I'm running W7 and use Google Chrome. I have no problem putting stuff into the black spaces.

1. Find item in edit mode that you want to place in black space.
2. Left click (hold it down!!)
3. Right click twice (with left mouse still held down)
4. You should have the 'profiler' at this point. If you do, it's safe to let go of both of the mouse buttons.
5. Place in room by left clicking. :)

What I do to decorate black spaces is to usually go to the yodepot and get tiles and cover them up. OR i get flowers. Also you could just feel it up with paintboards or whiteboards :P
