Hi Sue, welcome to the forums!

Just click on that chair icon at the bottom of your screen...


Click on "My Stuff" underneath the stores...


And lastly, click and drag the item into your room!

ANOTHER EASY METHOD! IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ITEM IS CALLED OR WHERE THE ITEM IS PUTTED IN YOUR HOUSE!
From a room to inventory ...

Click the orange - yellow crate at the bottom right of the screen, that's the inventory.
Click the 'In Use'
Items currently you use, you wear, you put in your rooms will be there.
Find the item you want to move to your inventory.
It will say, "This item is currently on use"
Click the blue button saying: "Move to Inventory"
It will say, " '*item name*' has been moved to your inventory.
Click okay
Check your inventory.
Click available.
Search for the name.
If it's there, then you're SUCCESSFUL.

NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY MOVE ONE ITEM AT A TIME TO INVENTORY.
