We did have a used book store but it closed down and I so miss it!

Omg, the scholastic magazines were THE BEST when I was a child, I loved picking out things I liked for my parents to buy

I used to hate reading but that was because I only read what I was assigned to read for school. We even had summer reading lists we had to read every summer. It was torture. I liked exactly one of those books (The Westing Game). So anyway, in 7th grade my teacher encouraged us to pick out 'bubble gum' books out of those scholastic catalogs. It was what she called the fun books because they were like chewing gum for the mind. I credit her with my love of reading and wrote her a letter thanking her when I was in high school. She wrote back and sent me a beautiful book of quotes. Many of those inspirational quotes went up as decorations in the halls when I was an RA in college.

I remember scholastic when i was at primary school (37 years ago now) we also had the scholastic book fair too.

My son ( hes in primary school which over here is from age 5-10/11years) still has the scholastic magazines he brings them home about once a month to pick which books he would like they have some 2 dollar books in the magazine and most are 5 dollars.

My daughter ( shes in intermediate school which is age 10/13 years) they had ealrier this year the scholastic book fair they had it set up in part of her schools library so we could buy books and they could too

What types of books does everyone like to read? Anything you've read lately you would recommend?

Always looking for something new. Having trouble getting hooked on something. I like Sci-Fi, mystery and interesting novels.

Hey, I like true crime type things...if thats what theyre called?

My fav book so far is called Bushfire: My Australian Story - By Sally Murphy

It recounts the worst bushfire in Australian history, called Black Saturday which occurred on the 7th February 2009, where the temperatures reached 46.4c (115.5F) and resulted in the deaths of 173 people, and more than a million animals

the fire danger for this day, which is measured between 1 - 100 (100 being the worst) peaked at close to 200.

The fire burned for 35 days. More than 19,000 firefighters battled the blase, with another 3500 on standby.
The fire burned through more than 1740 square miles of land, and more than 3500 buildings (including more than 2000 houses) were destroyed.
The worst part is, part of fire was deliberately lit by a mentally unstable man called Brendan Sokaluk, who actively participated as a volunteer firefighter...

Sokaluk was convicted of 10 counts of arson causing death and sentenced to 17 years and nine months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 14 years.

This means he is eligible for parole as of June 2023 :'(

There was also a song made to embrace the local community, that i absolutely love to this day, I really recommend everyone the check it out. Its called: Tangerine Sky - Dedicated to the Victorian Bushfire Victims. Its a beautiful tribute. This can be found on youtube and also provides some photos of the fires too

Very interesting read..
I would also highly recommend googling/watching youtube videos of the event if thats something that interests you..

Sadly, fire season over here has already begun, with emergency bushfire warnings already being issued a few hundred yards from my current residence.. scary stuff..

Have you read the Southern Vampire Mysteries that the True Blood show based on. The books are 100x better and very different from the show. The show more took some ideas from book one and two and idk wrote whatever they wanted but the books are great!
I read Evicted for sociology. That was really good.

Just wanted to say hello and half way thru a week! I found out my alzheimer friend took a fall -broke her arm split her head open and fractured her neck, she was taken by ambulance yesterday to hospital. Drs had a hard time as she was very agitated fighting-they needed to do a ct scan but she wouldn't calm down, they did give her 3 shots of a med but even THAT didn't calm her down, she was then placed on morphine which did get her calm enough for the scan. Instead of stitches they used a special glue to close the head wound?

Dr and respiratory came in to explain that her heart and breathing wasn't to great and it was high then low-so they explained if it goes to low it will eventually stop-I am and have been so worried since hearing this and I hope with all my heart that she will be ok and things will mend. She has declined drastically with the alzheimers-this disease is really awful as you lose the person once to this disease then again when they pass away.

So meanwhile I been trying to rest so I can get better with a few things but been too upset with what's going on. so please say a prayer for her.

don't mean to be a downer, but that's life right now.
oh and she use to make thee best lemon meringue pie!!!! I am so thankful for all the years of her cooking-she could cook so good. think I just might have to buy a pie and have a big piece!!!

does anyone make their own pies anymore?
