When the US palaeontologist Othniel C Marsh discovered a dinosaur in 1879, he called it ‘brontosaurus’, meaning ‘thunder lizard but the brontosaurus was later removed from from lists of dinosaur names when Marsh’s dinosaur was found to be an adult apatosaurus.

In 1968, the Russian Zond 5 spacecraft carried two tortoises as it circled the Moon. The tortoises survived but lost 10 per cent of their weight.
