Is playing slot games the only way to level up in the compaion app? Because it seems to be the only thing that gives yopoints.

you can also earn points by sending gift from your "friend's request" tab.
*as noted, Sending gifts does not cost you anything.

by doing so, sometimes it will give you 10points and some coins per person you send gifts to.
and just play slots if you have Golden spins. no Golden spins will give you some points depending on how much u bet. if u maxed your bet, the more points u get. But like in my situation, i keep myself just on the lowest bet which is 100c that gives me only 1point. Then i frequently came back in the app to check if i already have golden spins.
