It says I should be getting notifications of my threads, but I don't get an email or anything. Which is kind of a pain because you have to just sit there refreshing to see if anyone responded. Do people usually get email notifications?

Unfortunately you can only get pop up notifications for Private messages. Only way to check if someone has responded to your thread is by clicking "View your posts" where the red arrow threads means they are unread.
